Некоторые из ингалирующих бутан внезапно умирают, часто - при совершении активных действий. Бутан - ингаляционный наркотик, который сенсибилизирует миокард к аритмогенным эффектам катехоламинов. В экспериментах на крысах был показан аритмогенный и вторичный ишемический эффект при ингаляции бутана.
