He was born on August 28, 1943 in the city of Bataysk of the Rostov region. Graduated from the Rostov medical institute (1967). Doctor of medical sciences (1973). Professor (1977). Academician of PAPAH (1997). The corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Science, then – RAS (2014).

Nikolay N. Karkischenko worked in the system of medical research establishments and administrative organizations of the Ministry of Health. At different times held positions of the rector of the Rostov state medical university, the deputy minister of health care of RSFSR, the director of Institute of new technologies of the Russian Academy of Medical Science, the director of Scientific center of biomedical technologies of the Russian Academy of Medical Science (nowadays – Federal State Budgetary Institution "Scientific center of biomedical technologies of Federal Medical and Biological Agency") in which is Academic Director to this day. He is the scientist and the teacher in the field of development of specifics of protection of arms and military equipment. Head and participant of development of defense programs in special pharmacology and toxicology. The author of scientific works and inventions on problems of protection of arms and military equipment and efficiency of specifics of protection. Winner of the state awards, awards of the Government of the Russian Federation and award of FMBA of Russia (1987, 1990, 2014).
